Why Modern Art & Design Remains Influential...
31st March 2025
Why does mid-century modern design remain so influential?
Emerging in the post-war era, this movement combined functionality with clean, organic forms which helps emphasize craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless aesthetics. Designers like Charles & Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, Ercol, and G-Plan created pieces that still shape interiors today.
Beyond furniture, the period also saw remarkable work in ceramics, glassware, and studio pottery, with artists like Hans Coper and Lucie Rie pioneering bold, tactile forms. Scandinavian design, in particular, became synonymous with simplicity, quality, and elegance.
Whether in a vintage setting or a contemporary space, these designs continue to be admired and collected worldwide.
Why does modern art continue to captivate and challenge us?
From the expressive works of Dame Elisabeth Frink to the vivid, reimagined landscapes of David Hockney, modern art redefined creative boundaries. These artists, alongside talents like Philip Naviasky, pushed the limits of form, colour, and subject matter, leaving a mark on the art world.
Sculptors, painters and mixed-media artists of the 20th century embraced new materials and radical perspectives, creating pieces that provoke thought and inspire generations. Whether through figurative works or bold abstractions, modern art remains as relevant and collectable as ever.
